being played tonight in Hampton...any local guys in it?

i know Percy Harvin, Damon McDaniel and Chris Bell aren't playing...but Brandon Minor is...i think that's about the extent of the big names

Perdue was a great player on a bad team. I'm assuming you didn't see him play against Gate City because he played one of his best games against them. He could have started for any team in this area and would have greatly excelled with teams like Gate City, PV, JIB, etc. He just unluckily got stuck in a bad situation with barely any support staff, or coaching in his four years at Lee.

BTW, he played in a National All Star game in Tennessee last month and passed for around 200 yards with two TD's, and he also signed to play for defending I-AA National Champions Appalachian State.

nah i didnt go to too many gc games...dont doubt he's a good player if he's playin in the game

Brandon Gayheart's face reflected a blend of pain and pride after his high school athletic career closed hundreds of miles from the cool mountains of Southwest Virginia.

Ignoring a persistent shoulder injury, the former Richlands star performed well for the West in the VHSCA all-star football game late Friday at Darling Stadium.

While hyped stars such as University of Tennessee recruit Brent Vinson from Phoebus earned the headlines in the East's 7-0 win, Gayheart was content with the big picture.

"We felt that we had something to prove," Gayheart said. "We were told that we would get beat bad. They (the East players) talk a lot. Once the game started, they realized we weren't going to lie down ."

The 6-foot-4, 234-pound Gayheart, who started at defensive end, proved his point by blocking a field goal attempt, swatting down a pass and collecting four tackles.

"I'll always remember those plays and this entire week," Gayheart said. "The East had a lot of quickness, but I just did what the coaches told me to do. Coaches won't steer you wrong."

Gayheart received plenty of coaching during the intensive two-a-day sessions in the Hampton heat. Once again, Gayheart adjusted in his own steady way.

"I'm used to the heat from building roofs with my dad," Gayheart said.

The pain was noticeable as Gayheart removed his pads late Friday night, yet he never complained.

"I injured my shoulder midway through the season against rival Tazewell, but injuries are just part of this sport," Gayheart said. "You have to play through pain. Time off is time lost."

Gayheart will finally undergo shoulder surgery July 25th.

"I did rehab and tried to let the shoulder heal," Gayheart said. "Nothing worked, so now I have to go under the blade."

The next stop for Gayheart is Morehead, Ky. where he joins former Richlands teammate Garrett Arms on the Morehead State University football team. Gayheart will take a redshirt season as his shoulder recuperates.

Richlands head coach Greg Mance, who served as an assistant on the West coaching staff, felt the entire nine man contingent from Southwest Virginia contributed.

"Brandon was a force all night, I don't think Garrett gave up a sack and all our local guys made an impact," Mance said. "We play good football in Southwest Virginia."

Lee's Matt Perdue started at quarterback for the West, completing 2 of 6 passes for 27 yards. Trey Smith of George Wythe supplied five tackles in a starting linebacker role and delivered one of the the game's biggest hits.

The 6-2 Vinson, the East co-MVP, sent a message to Tennessee fans with his 134-yards in receiving. Vinson will spend the fall at Hargrave Military Academy before heading to Knoxville.
